So we made some GREAT progress on the hunt for granite. In fact, we’ve made our decision! (More about that in another post)) But first we stopped for another diner breakfast on the way to the store.
Today we went to Mom’s Kitchen (in business since 1972) to start our day.
If Anna Marie is manning the hostess stand, I can pretty much guarantee that you will have a smile on your face within seconds. She is absolutely one of the happiest, friendliest people I’ve ever met! (She told me she drives her husband CRAZY in the morning when she hops out of bed with her bubbly personality primed and ready for the day.)
The next thing you’ll learn is that apparently the “Mom” in Mom’s Kitchen must be a hoarder. There are more knick knacks and ceiling fans in that diner than I have ever seen in one place! It is kind of distracting, but I also noticed the items didn’t look dusty…so somebody must spend LOTS of time dusting all the stuff. (Maybe that’s also part of Anna Marie’s job since I’m sure she would have enough energy to tackle the task…and still keep smiling!)
I also noticed how kind the waitresses were to the older “locals” who came in to eat breakfast alone. I heard the conversation between a little elderly gentleman and his server…and she treated him like her favorite grandfather. Apparently he comes in often-maybe daily. She asked him about his recent doctor’s appointment, and even offered to have the chef make him a breakfast sandwich that I don’t believe was even on the menu. And of course Anna Marie stopped by his table and bent down to hear a “secret” he told her, and she gave him a hug and a smile. It takes a village…especially when people are alone and lonely. It really warmed my heart. That’s what makes an old-time diner MUCH more than a place to eat a meal.
So give Mom’s Kitchen a try if you’re in Fort Lauderdale…and tell Anna Marie “hi” for me. (But I bet she’ll greet you first!)
Now…off to the granite store…
