Let me ask you a question…Would you rather be here…
Or HERE??
I think you can guess which one we picked. And this morning was another time of exploring the OLD Florida that is disappearing more and more every year.
After leaving our hotel in Ocala, we drove this quiet stretch of highway and came across a good spot for breakfast. Frank’s Family Restaurant was tucked away in a tiny strip mall, but we could tell from the steady stream of “locals” going through the door it must be the place for breakfast in Hernando.
Fred’s Breakfast…REAL HAM…and REAL GOOD! |
My Breakfast…Great Rye Toast…and the Scrambled Egg was Perfect! |
After devouring my plate of scrambled eggs and ham, I decided I just HAD to try their homemade sausage gravy with my home fries. So I asked our pleasant server for a small bowl…just so I could taste it.
You KNOW you’re in Grandma’s kitchen when the food comes out in an antique china pattern like this…chips and all!
After a short visit with the friendly staff (and I presume the owner) we paid our bill (About $15!) and got back on that Road Less Traveled, to finish our journey to Tampa. We are THRILLED with the Howard Johnson Hotel Fred booked for our stay. It’s about six blocks from Raymond James Stadium, so we can walk to the game, and we’ve already walked to a great sports bar (Brickhouse Bar and Grill) to make sure we can watch the Hawkeye BASKETBALL game tomorrow night…and they have the Big Ten Network…so we’re all set. In fact, while we were checking things out at the Brickhouse, we decided to eat a late lunch/early dinner there.
So after trying for FOUR days…
I FINALLY GOT MY SALAD!!!
Tomorrow we expect a large flock of Hawks to swoop in from the frigid North to keep us company here in Tampa. We’ll keep you posted!
