It’s been a long time since we’ve eaten at Okiboji Grill in Iowa City. And it may be a long time before we go back.
We stopped in earlier this week for a quick lunch, and “it wasn’t anything to write home about” as my Mom used to say.
The first thing I noticed was a strange smell in the dining room…like musty carpet.
I ordered their “signature” soup…Chicken Tortilla. And Fred ordered the Grilled Chicken Wrap. I told the server to make sure my soup was HOT when she served it, since cold soup (unless it’s SUPPOSED to be cold) is a pet peeve of mine. She assured me it would be hot. When she brought it, I took a bite before she left our table…and the soup left with her. Not hot. And my Mom’s belief that “we eat with our eyes first” certainly didn’t make Fred’s wrap something to look forward to. Very blah…and very bland.
When my soup was returned to me, it was still not overly hot, but the next issue was the texture. It was thick and starchy. And it tasted like an institutional recipe from a freezer bag It tasted like an average, canned soup. NOT a “signature dish”…something I would want my restaurant to be known for.
Like I said, when we’re home in Iowa City, there are so many places we LOVE to eat…it pains me to waste even a lunch in a place that just doesn’t measure up. And at least the other day…Okoboji Grill did NOT measure up.
