Today Miss Claire got a private cooking lesson from Meemaw while her sisters were in school.
Since Chive Carrots were on tonight’s menu, I was busy cutting large carrots into matchstick shapes. I always find a way to include grand kids in food prep, so I asked Claire to pick up the carrot sticks and put them in the pot to cook. Then I decided it was also good time to “show and tell” her HOW I cut them safely, even though she knows she is still too young to touch a chef’s knife. (I do let the grand kids use cheese spreaders to “cut” the ends off of green beans.)
I told Claire to always remember “flat is our friend” when cutting something round and “wiggly” like carrots. I first hold the carrot very firmly to split it down the middle. Then I flip both halves onto their FLAT side so I can cut the matchsticks without the knife slipping. It is a simple trick but it keeps fingers and knives from meeting in a very unfriendly manner!
Claire was a great “flipper”…She turned the carrots over on their FLAT side so I could cut them safely. |
And what was the first thing Claire told her sisters when they got home from school? You guessed it…Flat is now Claire’s friend too!
Precious children are NEVER too young to learn kitchen safety tips…
