Our long road trip back to the Heartland was filled with some beautiful scenery…
And even though parts of Nebraska are flat as a fritter, there were still some beautiful vistas to be found. I don’t know what it is about abandoned buildings that is so appealing to me. Maybe it’s the stories I’m sure those old structures would tell…if only they could.
We arrived in Lincoln to spend the night, and we walked to a nearby “pub” for a bite to eat. And since those nachos in Laramie had been so tasty we decided to try the Nebraska version…and let me just say right up front…that was a HUGE mistake!
Have you ever taken a bite of something you thought should taste a certain way and been totally blindsided by a completely different taste? Well…that plate of nachos was one of those awful moments!
This “restaurant” (I’ll use the term loosely) layered gooey canned cheese sauce and cold nacho chips with a combination of chili, beans, olives and SWEET BBQ SAUCE…and topped by a decorative “floret” of guacamole! It was absolutely horrific. (It’s been two months since we put that explosive combo of flavors in our mouths…and I can STILL TASTE IT.)
Ugh!!!
So after that less than stellar final road trip “meal” (again…the term used loosely!) we headed to our hotel before an early start toward home the next day.
The flat land of Nebraska quickly turned into the beautiful rolling hills of Iowa. It was a welcome sight for these weary road trip travelers!
And then we were HOME.
So grateful for our amazing weeks long journey…and anxious to unpack our sturdy little car.
And after a 4,000 mile round trip road trip…what would YOU feel like doing?
Me? I couldn’t wait to start cooking! So off to the grocery store I went.
And dinner that night?
First…a prayer of thanksgiving for our safe travels and new memories…
Then…DINNER AT HOME for Peepaw and me. (No nachos anywhere in sight!)
It was an amazing, memory filled journey.
But it did feel good to be home again…and back in my very own kitchen.
And who knows what I’ll be cooking up to share with all of you… 🙂

Parts of Nebraska are flat, but most of the state is not. Get off that interstate and you will see lots of hills! Looking forward to your next adventure.

You’re absolutely right Carmen…and thanks for your comment! While we were driving across your state I researched Panorama Point, the highest point in Nebraska at 5,429 feet! Maybe NEXT time we will make time to see it. We simply ran out of time for a detour on this trip. But Peepaw and I are ALWAYS ready to throw a suitcase in the car and take off again. So keep reading…and thanks for coming along for the ride!

Enjoyed the trip. Heard on the radio yesterday that Highway 20 is a good way to see Nebraska. Your home again meal looks wonderful!

Thanks so much Grandma Laura! We’ll keep that in mind the next time we head West! And that first meal at home in our kitchen DID taste pretty darn good. I enjoy going out to eat…but cooking my own meals isn’t a chore for me…it’s a pleasure! Thanks again for your comments and suggestion!
