“If you build it they will come.” That’s a line from Field Of Dreams…one of my favorite movies of all time. And it’s true. Baseball has been a constant in the lives of our family…for generations.
It all began with Peepaw.
And then our sons…
And that love of baseball continued on to their college days…
And now another generation…
I did play softball for a time…but I can take no credit for the athletic abilities of our kids and grandkids. I give all that credit to Peepaw. But I’ve always been a cheerleader on MANY levels. (Yes that’s really me on the far right.)
My cheerleading looks quite a bit different these days, but I’m still just as vocal. (In fact, maybe MORE so.)
They really call these guys the Boys of Summer???? I beg to differ in the Heartland! Sometimes Mother Nature forgets to flip her switch to Springtime mode.
In fact we keep blankets in our trunk all summer long…just in case. And I can’t tell you how often we drag them out. Better safe than sorry…or frozen!
Yes, this was me last year when we attended our first baseball game of the season,,,and I can truthfully say I don’t think I have EVER been colder than I was that day! Wearing two shirts, a sweater, a winter coat and two blankets. A fashion statement I was NOT. And I was even too cold to lift that cup of coffee to my frozen lips! (Our little baseball playing grandson ran up to give me a hug…in shirtsleeves! (He assured me he was plenty warm enough.)
As we begin the process of packing to head back North I’ll be more than ready to go. We miss our family all winter, so our summer days are filled with baseball and softball and soccer…and road trips to watch it all. There are more great memories to be made. More innings to watch. More hot dogs to eat. And more hugs to give both the winners and the losers when the final score is tallied.
Yes, baseball has been a constant in my life for half a century. And it’s still one of my favorite places on earth, no matter what the temperature!
So from the Cubs vs Marlins last week in Miami…
To this precious memory of our our littlest bat boy back in Iowa…
If you build it…They WILL come.
And so will we.
And we’ll make some precious memories along the way.
