When our sons were little boys, we made Christmas cookies together every year…and last year I asked Nick’s girls if they would like to continue the tradition.
Let’s just say they were happy to oblige. And who cares that we couldn’t find the cookie cutters in their kitchen. We simply used some jar lids and a pizza cutter. (And being a “Hawkeye House” the only cutter we DID find was HERKY, the University of Iowa mascot!)
So here is the FUN…from the dough to the decorations!
I’m always amazed at the concentration such tiny cooks display in the kitchen…
And the decorating is the step they all look forward to. (I try not to notice the ratio of decorations on cookies to the decorations eaten before they reach the cookies.)
Every cookie is a masterpiece waiting to be consumed.
And attention to detail starts at a very early age…
Meemaw’s Tip: Place frosting in a zip lock bag and cut off a TINY corner of the bag. And you’ve got an instant piping bag. Then let your creativity go wild!
The girls mastered this art…successful on their FIRST try!
The smell of baking cookies and the sound of grandkid’s laughter is a combination I’ll never get tired of.
Ever.
And those finished cookies were lovingly placed on a plate for parental inspection when they returned from their day at work.
And that night before they went to bed, the girls placed a cookie on the book shelf next to their elf named Elmer…and GUESS WHAT!???
I think I know where MY Christmas cookie cutters will end up. Passed from one generation to the next.
But no matter what shape those Christmas cookies are…those cookies and family memories go hand in hand.

You have more patience than I can imagine I don’t do them myself. Never did enjoy making OR eating those cookies.

LOL! Thanks for the compliment Jan! When it comes to my grandkids…I DO have the patience of Job. (But with others?? Not so much!) 🙂 And for anyone who might think I was rather lax by not tying the girl’s hair back that day in their kitchen? Nobody takes kitchen hygiene more seriously than this old Meemaw. (I’m affectionately known in culinary circles as the Queen of Bleach!) Yes…their clean hair was loose that day…but the FUN we shared was worth the risk since those cookies weren’t being shared with anyone else. And Jan…check out my blog posts about my Valentine cookies. That dough is the best sugar cookie recipe I’ve ever tasted. Merry Christmas! XOXO

Beautiful cookies and beautiful granddaughters! You know that real beauty is also in the memories you are making! ???

Thanks Patricia! These kitchen memories mean the world to me. And I know I am leaving behind a culinary legacy for our grandchildren. And that’s worth more than money can buy. Merry Christmas! XOXO
