When we spend time with our grandgirls in Indy I like to have a special treat ready for the girls when they burst through the front door after school. And these cinnamon and sugar sprinkled flour tortilla shells are the easiest treat you’ll ever make!
This is MY kind of treat. Simple. Inexpensive. No fuss. No muss. And absolutely delicious! These shells remind me of a treat I loved as a child.
My elderly grandmother spent summers with us on the farm. And since my mother worked at the local post office we needed someone to take care of my brother and me…and my grandmother too.
So Mom found someone to take care of ALL of us. She found a wonderful Amish girl named Mary. (We called her “Little Mary” since she couldn’t have weighed more than eighty pounds.) Little Mary was our “hired girl” as she was known then…but she became much more than that to all of us. She was a dear friend who treated all of us like family…and she cared deeply for my Grandma Grady.
Little Mary made the BEST pies. And she always made a special treat for me on her pie baking days. She would roll out any extra pie crust and spread some sweet butter over the dough, Then she would sprinkle the dough with a cinnamon and sugar mixture before baking that dough right along with her pies. That dough treat was made especially for my brother and me…and I can still taste that sweet and flaky pastry. It was a “melt in my mouth” magical treat!
Since I am not one to whip up a batch of pie dough on a whim, I decided to try recreating that delicious memory for our grandgirls in a much simpler way…so this in the “recipe” I dreamed up.
And here is the best part of MY treat. You need only THREE ingredients!
- Flour Tortilla Shells
- Cooking Spray
- Cinnamon and Sugar Mixture
This is MY kind of treat. Simple. Inexpensive. No fuss. No muss. And absolutely delicious!
Yes…I even think Little Mary would approve.

What a lovely story and and easy treat. This is one of the wonderful sinful treats that a person just has to eat once in awhile.

Thanks for your comment Marye! You know very well how good an Amish pie tastes..and Little Mary was a PRO when it came to that homemade pie crust! So my version of her treat is much faster and easier. And those flour tortilla shells bake up light and bubbly…a real treat.

My mom used to make us little cinnamon rolls from leftover pie crust. I enjoyed those even though I am not a pie crust fan. I will try these when my little great granddaughters visit. I can see how happy they made your granddaughters. So cute! xo

Practicing making this before a child comes tomorrow. My first effort was an epic fail & not edible. I decided to try again but put on a rack and less time. It was so good. ? I only bought 6″ size for these 3 1/2 yr. olds. Grandma could eat 2 though. ☺ XO for the recipe.

Happy Baking and Memory Making!

I will have to try these for my grandchildren. We have 6 grandsons and 1 granddaughter . Mane she can make these with when she comes to visit next time. Thanks for the idea.

Thanks Margaret! Please let me know how YOUR grandkids like them! Just watch those tortilla shells closely while baking! As soon as they puff up and begin to change color…remove them from the oven! They can burn quickly.
(I think your grandkids (and YOU) will love them too!) 🙂
