Council Mountain Cafe - Council, Idaho

One of the first lessons children are taught is not to speak to strangers…but you’ll miss out on some great information if you pass up the opportunity to talk to the “locals” in Mom and Pop restaurants.

That’s why I couldn’t resist striking up a conversation with THIS fellow…

I didn’t catch his name…but soon the ice was broken, and when he left I turned around at our table to speak with the man seated behind me. He introduced himself as Jeff…another long-time resident of Council Mountain. (Although he DID admit to heading to Phoenix when Old Man Winter arrives!)

And let’s not forget the reason we came IN to this great spot…BREAKFAST!

And after cooking our food, the talented cook came out to take a break…so soon ALL of us were chatting.

So what tidbits did these great folks share about their town and their claim to fame??

Council Mountain is home to the 4th of July WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP PORCUPINE RACES!

Yes…Porcupines!

It seems the forest and mountains are TEEMING with Porcupines! So the local kids go out the night before the big event…and catch them! (Apparently porcupines are not too bright…no offence to any porcupines who may be reading this…)

So after the long-awaited heats and the final BIG race, the kids release the animals unharmed (calm down animal rights people!) and everybody is happy…even the porcupines.

It’s a WIN-WIN for everyone…including those newly-released porcupines!

Now…back on the road and headed for Portland…with a special stop filled with memories along the way…
