Yesterday I finally got around to sorting papers and cleaning out my office files, and I stumbled across this recipe for a perfect Thanksgiving. And the recipe brought tears to my eyes.
Our oldest granddaughter Emma brought this recipe to me last year when their family drove “over the river and through the woods” to share Thanksgiving with us here in Iowa.
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year because it is NOT about material things. It’s about family. It’s about memories. And it’s about being grateful for the blessings we share around our large table. And trust me, when we get ALL of our grandkids and their parents together these days we need all five boards in our dining room table…and we add a card table too!
I will always remember coming downstairs and smelling that intoxicating smell of turkey roasting in our big old farmhouse oven. It’s a childhood memory that has warmed my heart for more than sixty years!
Mom loved to cook, and her holiday dinners were epic. From the stemmed water glasses to the lace tablecloth, her meals were a feast for our eyes as well as our stomachs. Those meals were something to look forward to.
But it wasn’t just the food and the beautiful table. It was the coming together of family and friends. And sitting around our big old table for hours. Talking and laughing and eating. And sharing stories that spanned generations. And those memories are still priceless today.
So if any of you are dreading the cooking and cleaning and chaos that can come with a houseful of family and friends, just remember Emma’s recipe. And notice it’s got a large helping of family and FUN.
It’s those family memories made around your table that will last much longer than those Thanksgiving leftovers!
Like Emma says…Add a pinch of FAMILY.
And you can create your very own perfect Thanksgiving too.
