When a road trip takes us east through Illinios to visit our Indy kids, our stomachs almost always begin to growl around Mahomet. So on our last trip we tried something different. We stopped at a Hen House Restaurant for lunch.
According to their menu, they have four locations in Illinois.
Even though this eatery is located right off I-74, it seemed to be filled with mostly “locals” when we stepped inside…
Our server quickly arrived to take our orders, and Peepaw and I decided to start our meals with a small side salad.
It’s a funny thing about “healthy” salads…they can become unhealthy VERY quickly. Especially when there are equal parts of cheese and iceberg lettuce in the dish. But the dressing tasted homemade, so I was happy to chow down anyway. (When I’m hungry I am certainly less “picky”!)
After our salads, we split the Hen House Special of the day…a fish dinner.
Splitting an entree makes sense on several levels. It contains half the calories of the full meal, and it also cuts our bill in half. Both of those reasons are important to us. Many folks wonder how Peepaw and I can take so many road trips, and the truth is…we’re very “frugal” diners. (I think that’s the politically correct term!)
The fish was definitely curly and crispy and the fries were tasty. And since the dinner also came with cole slaw we split that too…
The cole slaw was creamy and delicious, although it was coated with more dressing than I would have added.
The Hen House Restaurant decor has a “country” theme, and the walls are filled with vintage farm tools and other farm-related items.
Our Hen House meal was a simple lunch in a no-frills restaurant. And sometimes that’s exactly what we’re looking for when we’re anxious to get back on the road and finish our drive…especially since there are girls to hug at the end of that road trip.
And that’s the best reason of all.
