Halloween came early this year at Iowa City’s City High School…and I was lucky to be a part of it!
Mrs. Green called to ask if I would consider being a judge for a special event in her classroom. Back in MY day her class would be called Home Economics, but now it has a much longer name I can;t remember. But let’s just say Mrs. Green is an awesome teacher, no matter what you call her class!
She divided her students into teams. Each team decided what flavor of cupcake to bake, and they got to work. The next day came the REAL fun…the cupcake decorating! And that’s when I arrived.
The kids were able to choose from a wide variety of items to flavor their icing and to decorate those cupcakes.
The cupcakes would be judged on these two criteria:
- The Best Flavor Combination
- The Best Halloween Theme
I had a blast watching the creative juices flowing in that room! The students were totally invested in the entire process.
The room was a beehive of activity as they rushed to meet the deadline for their embellishments.
In what other high school class can you eat your mistakes??
The attention to detail was fascinating. Just watch this young woman create a spider web from a melted marshmallow!
When Mrs. Green called “Time’s Up” the students brought their finished creations to the judging table.
Each group got the opportunity to tell me what flavors they used in their creations.
I was joined by a number of high school teachers as we began the nearly impossible task of choosing the winners of the competition. Each and every group found unique ways to take the simple cupcake to new levels of Halloween fun!
Imagine a table filled with witches and spiders and “raspberry blood” to be tasted…and I tasted them all! A sugar buzz was a small price to pay for the chance to see the incredibly creative talents of those students.
When Mrs Green sat down to tally the votes we all waited with baited breath to learn the results.
The good news is the every single team got some first place votes! And one team created an icing that I will try in my own kitchen. They combined powdered sugar and brown sugar in their frosting and it was amazing!
Yes, I had a ball in that classroom. And anyone lucky enough to be in Mrs. Green’s City High School classes should count themselves fortunate. The creative juices she unleashed in that Halloween project will be remembered by this old Meemaw for a long, long time.
