Situated smack dab in the epicenter of Oregon wine country, Hyland Estates Winery in Dundee is a beautiful place. It is one of Oregon’s oldest and largest vineyards, spanning over 200 acres with roughly 180 acres of vines. We were thrilled to learn that our overnight stay at the beautiful La Bastide Bed and Breakfast included a complimentary tasting for two at the winery.
(Disclosure: Thank you to La Bastide Bed and Breakfast for our complimentary wine tasting. As always, the opinions expressed in this post are 100% my own.)
Check out this gorgeous view from the patio at La Bastide!
Our short walk to the tasting room took us past rows and rows of ripening grapes. Would you like proof??
These gorgeous, mature vines were planted way back in 1971. That’s the same year Peepaw and I got married!
Those are some REALLY OLD vines. (And WE ought to know!) In fact we began our married life in the nearby Oregon town of McMinnville. So we put down our first roots just like those grapes! And just look at the luscious fruit beginning to ripen.
Strolling past those acres of vines was a truly magical experience. It is hard to believe how those vines have taken hold and flourished.
Those old vines soon led us to the nearby tasting room, nestled in the heart of the vineyard.
The interior of the building is gorgeous. And handyman Peepaw was intrigued by the architecture.
Every window in the tasting room frames spectacular views of the vineyard.
On the other hand, I was less intrigued by the architecture and more intrigued by the wine in those bottles! (Check out my often used hashtag #MeemawSips. )
Meet Kane, the tasting room host, who met us with those bottles and a smile.
Unfortunately it was almost closing time when we arrived, so when you visit don’t make the same mistake we did! (The Hyland Estates tasting room closes at 5 p.m.)
Hyland Estates produces some amazing wines from those mature vines. Their tasting menu features Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Chardonnay, and multiple Pinot Noirs. I hurried through a tasting of four of their wines.
After savoring each sip, I purchased a bottle of their Riesling as a treat for Peepaw since he gravitates toward sweeter wines.
As we walked back to La Bastide, I marveled at the view in that beautiful vineyard. And that’s when I realized that in some ways Peepaw and I have gotten better with age too…just like those glorious 1971 Hyland Estates vines.
Just look at the wonderful family our sturdy 1971 vines have produced!
An exceptional vintage indeed.
