Fun is the name of the game at our house. But before the organized chaos of GrandCamp begins…I always take a few minutes the day before to anticipate the memories that are yet to be made. (And some red wine and dark chocolate doesn’t hurt either!)
Peepaw and our son Nick have this Indy Girl Hand-Off” down to a science. We leave our house at 8am Central time and Nick leaves his house at the the exact same time. We head across the Mighty Mississippi River into Illinois…
and we ALL arrive at a designated spot in tiny Carlock, Illinois at the same time! It’s like clockwork.
We grab a bite to eat at a small cafe (“Nothing to write home about” as my mom used to say) and we switch cars for the drive home. You see, our four passenger convertible would NOT accommodate the five of us plus some cousins during our GrandCamp adventures, so we send our convertible on to Indy and we head back to Iowa in Nick’s minivan.
The three hour return trip is filled with conversations about the fun times ahead, and soon we’re crossing that beautiful river and heading back into our home state…
And that’s when the questions really heat up. “Are we almost there?” “How much longer?”
You see…Grandcamp does not officially begin until I snap THIS photo!
Let the FUN begin!
After several hours of play it was time for me to exercise my civic duty, and privilege! It was Primary voting day in Iowa.
It’s never too early to learn how important every election is. So here was lesson #1 at GrandCamp 2018…
Of course the girls did NOT vote, but the precinct workers gave them stickers anyway.
All that swimming meant the girls were STARVING (their words!) so of course they wanted wings and fries. And the BEST wings and fries in the UNIVERSE are at The Vine in Iowa City.
And crispy fries.
Yes, Grandcamp is FILLED with FUN. Every day.
And now that these kids are old enough to enjoy showing ME a thing or two in the kitchen. Here is Lolo who whipped up a batch of her favorite chocolate cookies yesterday.
They are absolutely DELISH! (We’ll share the recipe later.)
And last night was Movie Night…and we picked a GOOD one.
What a fun way to end our first full day of GrandCamp 2018.
And tonight? We’re heading off to see those Iowa cousins! More memories to be made…so stay tuned!

Will you be able to get the rest of the grands?

Hi Linda! I’m sorry it took me SO LONG to answer your question…but I’ve been living in a WHIRLWIND for the past two weeks! I’m back at my computer and I’ll be sharing all the details and recipes from this years GrandCamp2018 over the next few weeks. Because of our Iowa grands baseball and softball schedules our time to unite all the kids was sorely limited this year 🙁 But there is a plan in place in July when we will all trek to Indy to spend time together. Stay tuned for THOSE details, God willing!
