Iowa is not known as a tourist destination, but you would have a hard time convincing our Indy grand daughters of that. Our First Annual GrandCamp was a huge success!
Earlier this summer, our Indy family told us their girls would like to spend a week with us in Iowa City. We were ecstatic! You see, when the whole family comes to visit us, it’s only for a day or two, since our son and daughter in law must get back to their jobs…so we’ve never had the opportunity to really show those three grand daughters where their daddy grew up…and where their mommy went to college. So this week in Iowa City was something we were were ALL excited about.
Peepaw and I took a mini road trip to Michigan to see his sister at their lake home, then we swung down to Indy to spend the night. The next morning we loaded the girls and their luggage (and their stuffed animals and dolls) into our car and we headed West for their week long visit at our house. And who can start a road trip to GrandCamp on an empty stomach? Not THIS crew! That’s why we made an early morning stop in Lebanon, Indiana at Flap Jacks Pancake House Restaurant.
You’ll notice little sis Claire has her eyes closed? That could be because she savors every bite of food she puts into her mouth! Those three kids are good little eaters who are willing to try all kinds of foods. They’re always up for tasting new things…and that makes this old Meemaw VERY happy.
After a hearty breakfast we resumed our six hour journey to Iowa City. And how did we pass some of that time? We used my smart phone to look up weird laws in the United States of America. And let me just say…there are some doozies!!!
- It’s illegal to kiss for longer than five minutes in Iowa.
- You can’t sing in your swimsuit. (Little Claire would be in serious trouble with THAT one.)
- You can’t kiss someone with a mustache.
- You can’t sing off key in North Carolina.
We all laughed until our sides hurt!
And after all those laughs, it was actually time for lunch! And where would three little girls like to stop? You guessed it. Micky D’s.
I’m not sure how it happened, but during that last hour of our drive to Iowa City we suddenly found ourselves talking about artists. OKeefe, Monet, Van Gough…And we looked up some of their works on my phone. (I was amazed at how much these little girls already knew about that subject!)
It didn’t take more than a minute for those three to change into their swimsuits when we arrived at our house…but I had a surprise in store for them. I told them they couldn’t jump into the pool until I had a chance to vacuum it. So I changed into shorts and a t-shirt and got right to work while they watched. And when I was done I told them they could jump in when I counted to three. And when I reached that magic number…I jumped in with them…wearing my clothes! The looks on their faces were absolutely priceless!
What a great start to a fun filled week of GrandCamp! I’m just glad I remembered to take my phone out of my pocket before I jumped.
And about that singing in swimsuits law? All three girls would have been in serious trouble.

Love this! We had Camp Nana this summer for our seven year old grandson. He lives in Florida and we live in Tennessee. It was a great week!

Thanks so much for your comment Anne! Isn’t being a grandparent just the BEST??? That extended “quality time” spent with the children allows everyone to bond on an amazing level. And when ALL SEVEN of our grandkids get together…it’s an amazing feeling. LOVE…by the bushel!!! You’ll meet the rest of our brood in my future posts, so keep reading…and thanks again. (And HUGS to your little guy from Meemaw!)
