It’s not often I can come to the rescue for any of our family members. God knows I’m not a great swimmer, and I can’t scale tall buildings in a single bound. Heck, I can barely walk to the corner without complaining about my creaky knees. But several weeks ago I got a frantic call from the Heartland where a rescue was sorely needed.
One of our sons had planned a “guys” trip to Florida with some old high school buddies. (That trip had been scheduled for ages.) But at the last minute, our daughter in law found out she had to make a business trip to Texas that very same week!
Who could possibly drop everything to take care of their three daughters while those parents jetted off in separate directions? Hmm…TA DAH!! Meemaw to the rescue!
So in the blink of an eye…I went from one extreme to the other.
Peepaw dropped me off at the airport last Saturday afternoon, and thanks to TSA Pre-Check I was whisked through security in a flash. I had several hours before my flight so I decided a glass of wine might be in order as I thought about the busy, happy, unexpected week ahead with our Indy grandgirls.
My direct flight went off without a hitch, and our son was there to pick me up and whisk me to their wonderful home. And what Meemaw wouldn’t be thrilled with a welcome like this? (Just in case I forgot where our room is located!)
Our son barely had time to drop me at their house before he headed back to the airport to catch HIS flight. The next day we had time to enjoy a “girls only” brunch before their mother headed to the airport to catch HER flight. Whew!
That brunch was awesome, and someday I’ll share more of those details.
Those blueberry scones were delish.
As the girls and I all settled in for the week ahead I couldn’t help but marvel at the scene outside the window. It was a far cry from the weather I had left behind in our snowbird nest the day before!
The girls had their hearts set on my homemade pizza that night, so I whipped up a batch of my favorite pizza dough. You can find that recipe HERE.
One of our grands is now a pescatarian. (She won’t eat meat or poultry but she will eat fish.) So she requested a Margherita pizza. And I had a hankering for a sausage, mushroom, onion and pepper one. So of course I made one of each. Because who doesn’t love pizza for breakfast too??
I must say, they were BOTH mighty tasty!
It was a simple meal with no frills since we had consumed a variety of foods earlier at brunch.
I am happy to say the three girls are more drawn to fresh fruit than to candy…although the next day Big Sis did whip up the spice cake you can see in the background. She asked me to teach her how I make my cream cheese frosting. No recipe involved.
Their kitchen is beautiful, and filled with wonderful appliances. But it was built for giants!
No trip to their house is complete until I make my fried chicken and a big batch of my garlic mashed potatoes and gravy. And for our little pescatarian? I opened a box of coconut shrimp and threw them in the oven. I laughed when I realized I forgot to take a photo of dinner until I had nothing left but the bone from my chicken leg! And my chive carrots are another big hit with the girls.
Another night I made breakfast for dinner. Bacon, sausage patties and blueberry pancakes.
And speaking of breakfast? The hardest part of this visit is setting my alarm for 6 a.m. every morning!! It’s been YEARS since I’ve had to get up before the crack of dawn, so my breakfast meals have been pretty simple, Most mornings I’ve made Canadian bacon, cheese and egg muffins. But this morning I whipped up a breakfast burrito so I could use some of the leftover sausage from last night.
The verdict? Little Sis said “YUM!”
It brings back such great memories of watching our little boys when that big yellow bus pulls up each day.
Yes, coming to the rescue this week made me feel like a superhero. And spending time with these girls is a gift to me.
It truly is a win-win situation for ALL of us.
Now, if I could just warm up my feet…

Hey Wendy!!! Thanks again! And when I said our flight went off without a hitch…I ALMOST added that detail…but I was pressed for time! 🙂 It was time to start cooking yet ANOTHER diner for those girls!! 🙂 For all who may wonder about THAT detail…I had my phone IN MY HAND when I sat down in my seat on the plane. I fastened my seatbelt. And my phone was GONE!! SERIOUSLY!! So the wonderful woman seated with her hubby next to me (now I know her name is Wendy!) offered to CALL my phone. And it was completely wedged into the seat cushion behind me! So everyone within earshot got the opportunity to hear my ringtone which is “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”, sung by one of our tiny grandgirls years ago! Thanks again Wendy, and I will absolutely check out your blog. (And I bet MY readers will too!) So THANKS AGAIN…and Happy Springtime in Indiana!!!
