Last winter our friends Norm and Nancy gave me the recipe for Norm’s “World Famous” Margaritas, and this winter I FINALLY got around to making a pitcher to share with some of our Iowa friends who were visiting. Let me just say Norm must be a VERY popular guy when he’s whipping up batches of these frosty little cocktails since they were absolutely delicious!
(Norm happened to walk by while we were enjoying his creation so I snapped this photo of him holding MY drink before he could run away.)
Norm and and his wife Nancy are a seafaring pair with a long history of boats and ocean voyages. In fact last winter they allowed me to cook dinner in the galley on their catamaran. (Check out that dinner HERE.) (What a FUN “Bucket List” evening THAT was for me!)
Now if you’re like me, you’ve probably had more bad margaritas than tasty ones. Sometimes they are too strong or bitter, and sometimes they are overly sweet. But Norm’s version hits all the right notes. It’s a salt-rimmed symphony in a glass!
Imagine my surprise to learn that February 22 is National Margarita Day…so now is the perfect time to share Norm’s recipe with all of you, Dear Readers!
I did some research into the drink itself, and it turns out there are many ideas as to the origin of the tasty libation. One version says the margarita might have been invented in 1938 by Carlos (Danny) Herrera, the owner of a Tijuana restaurant named Rancho La Gloria. The story goes like this: A beautiful dancer from the Ziegfeld Follies told Mr. Herrera she was allergic to all forms of alcohol except tequila…but she didn’t like the taste of it. She asked him to create a drink she might like. So he simply added fresh lime and salt…and the margarita was born. (Ole’!)
Well…I say no matter HOW this drink got it’s start, Norm’s version is one you simply have to try.
The ingredients are very simple and it takes only a few minutes to blend up a pitcher. (MY BLENDER HOLDS SIX CUPS…ENOUGH TO MAKE FOUR SERVINGS.)
So…did our guests enjoy those drinks?
First Nic…
Then Sue…
They both agreed…Norm’s Margaritas ARE the best…no matter which side of the border you’re on!

I can’t wait to try this recipe. My birthday was yesterday (the 21st) so how happy am I that Margarita Day is the very next day?! We were planning to go to a local Mexican restaurant with our dear neighbors/friends on Friday night but we are supposed to get a whopper of a snow storm (after it was 62 degrees yesterday…in Minnesota…in February…wowowow! Anyway, I don’t think we are going to be able to go out to eat – I think the snow blowers will be working overtime so I thought making these would be a nice treat for our neighbors, after they all make it safely home. Thanks again! ๐ ๐ ๐

A quick question: How big is your blender? How many cups does it hold so I know how much water to add to “fill it up?” I have a Vita Mix blender and the container is BIG and I don’t want to water it down too much. We like our margaritas on the rocks. Thanks in advance ๐

That’s a GREAT question Kathy! I will go back and add that info to my blog post! My blender is rather small…just like everything else in our tiny home! ๐ My blender holds 6 cups. That made enough beverage to fill four rather small glasses. (See the photos.) I used ice and water since we like the frozen type of drink. I would keep the water amount to no more than the 6 cup mark so the ratio of ingredients stays the same…but if you have room you could always double the recipe. Experiment to your taste. Thanks again for your question, and let me know how you and your guests like the recipe. Cheers!
XOXO
