Our destination? DENVER! Well…actually…Lakewood, for now.
And, as usual, we were facing the dreaded trip across that pancake known as Nebraska.
But before we hit that Nebraska border we began to pass acres and acres filled with wind turbines. They’re EVERYWHERE in Western Iowa!
And when the clock said it was time for lunch, all of those small towns in Iowa were calling our names as we searched for a place we’d like to visit.
Towns with names like Avoca…and Neola…and Persia…
We finally pulled off of Interstate 80 in Underwood, and we followed an online suggestion to eat at a bar/lounge simply called The I-80 Lounge.
Now…here is where a mystery begins.
I took photos of our lunch. The usual. A tenderloin to share, and two side salads. And those photos are nowhere to be found. So use your imagination, I guess.
The food was good. Not great. But good. And the two young bartender/servers were pleasant enough…although I had to drag information out of them concerning the town, their schools, and the bar itself.
Then I noticed a sign hanging over the bar…and for some reason I DID get a partial photo of it. I’m glad, or you might have doubted what I’m about to say.
The sign said
“BEER & BACON FRIDAYS…FREE BACON…$2.00 BEERS”
I asked one of the bartenders (I think her name was Sam) if that sign was for real. She assured me that it was. So I asked her how much bacon they go through on a Friday night.
Her answer? 18 pounds! And their beers are only $2.
I’m not sure the math adds up if a profit is the desired result.
So after our quick lunch we headed back to the Interstate to begin our long, flat journey across the Cornhusker State…and I began again to ponder that Friday special.
Shoot…I bet I could eat a pound of that bacon myself! But it’s a long time until Friday…
So forget about it!
And HEAD WEST, Hubby…HEAD WEST!
