A carry on bag and a personal item are the only pieces of luggage I’m planning to take on our three week trip out West. Yes…you read that right.
Trust me when I say I usually overpack for our trips. Just look at this photo of the back seat of our car when we head South for the winter!
So imagine how proud I am right now when I show you my luggage for our upcoming trip!
We’re driving to Denver, so the first part of our journey gives me some flexibility on the items I can pile in the car. (By the time you read this we should already be there, God willing!) But we’re flying from Denver to Las Vegas before driving on to Oregon wine country, so that darn flight to Vegas determines what luggage I can take for the rest of our journey! Oh, I know…we could pay to check bags…but never forget…we’re thrifty folks! Besides, it was kind of fun to see how much I could cram into those two pieces! And since Peepaw doesn’t carry a purse, he will carry my computer as HIS personal item.
It’s really important to ROLL clothes to make as many things fit in a small space as possible. Like this! ( I even have a dress and two extraw pairs of sandals in that little bag!)
My purse would qualify as my “personal item”…but who says it has to be? Not me! Not when I can put my purse and whole lot of other stuff (jewelry, meds, extra glasses, another purse) in a bigger bag first! I scored this great pink bag for $1.50 at the Crowded Closet thrift store. A real bargain!
My purse then fits perfectly on top of all of that! And my quart size zip lock bag of liquids is right on top for TSA to inspect quickly.
My biggest luggage tip? Wear your HEAVY stuff on the plane! That’s why I’m wearing this outfit on the plane to Vegas! (Who cares if it will be 100 degrees when we land!)
I always take a scarf on flights. (I can wrap it around me to block out light, weird smells, etc.)
So wish me luck! And I’d say after this job of packing I’ve already beat the odds in Vegas!

I’m impressed ! Good tips about wearing heavy items on the plane- I’ve recently started to use packing cubes and can’t live without them now !
