Some things NEVER change…Like Peepaw’s love of popcorn! So I decided to share a post I wrote several years ago when friends visited us from Iowa. Now THEY share Peepaw’s Passion for Popcorn!
Peepaw has a nightly popcorn habit…and he shared that nightly treat with our friends Ed and Joyce during their visit to our Florida home. Joyce told us they usually make the microwave kind…but after she tasted Fred’s homemade version she was hooked!
So Peepaw’s “recipe” must be a keeper, since we got this photo from Ed and Joyce. And what I would give to be a fly on the wall in their kitchen when Ed tackles his first corn-popping attempt! (In fairness to Ed he is a MASTER at frying fish…so this won’t be his maiden voyage in the kitchen.)
And since Ed now wants Peepaw’s “recipe” for popcorn, I decided to share it with all of you. And Peepaw now understands how hard it is to write down a “recipe” when he simply dumps in the “right amount” of ingredients! Practice makes perfect so give it a try…and keep trying until you get it perfect! (You can always eat your mistakes…or feed the birds!)
So GOOD LUCK Ed…and to ALL of you! START POPPING!
PEEPAW’S FAMOUS POPCORN
INGREDIENTS
Unpopped popcorn (yellow or white-your choice)
Canola oil
Regular table salt (or popcorn salt if you prefer)
METHOD
Add about 1/4 Cup of canola oil to a heavy bottomed pan.
Heat popper (or a heavy bottom pan with lid) on medium-high heat until hot
Dump in enough popcorn to cover the bottom of the pan
Clamp on the lid and stir popper constantly when corn begins to pop (or shake covered pan back and forth on burner if you are not using a popper)
Keep stirring until popping sounds stop and dump immediately into serving bowl. Sprinkle with salt to taste. And add butter or other seasonings if you must. (But Peepaw eats it plain and simple!)
ENJOY!

Oh the memories this brings back from my childhood! Every sunday night dad made his popcorn and mom cut up apples to go with it. We’d watch the Disney show and have popcorn and apples.
I have never ever seen a popcorn popper like the ones shown in these pictures. Is this something that the Amish have and sell in their stores? Dad just used a certain pan with its lid and dubbed it his popcorn pan. He still makes his popcorn like this and in the same pan! Lol.
Have you ever gone to the Dutchman’s store in Cantril, IA? It is an amazing Amish store also.
Thank you for the awesome tour of the Stringtown Grocery, it is truly a wonderful place to go shopping. We are about 45 to 50 miles from the grocery and we do make many visits to this wonderful store.

Oh Lisa…Thanks for your comment! Isn’t it amazing how FOOD can trigger such wonderful childhood memories? And you want to know something? My Mom used to cut up apples to go with OUR Sunday night popcorn too!!! And sometimes she would put popcorn in a paper bag and shake it with some white sugar. It was delicious! I believe I have seen those poppers at Stringtown, and I have also found them brand new in thrift stores! (Maybe young newlyweds are getting them as gifts and they must have no idea how to use them!) 🙂 I think you may also find them at places like WalMart, etc. Good luck on your hunt for one…and thanks again for taking the time to write!
