We ALWAYS choose “the road less traveled”…and on our recent trip to Chicago we stopped for lunch at a small “mom & pop” joint called the Wilton Cafe at 116 W. 4th Street in Wilton, Iowa.
The main streets of small towns are the best place to find out what the “locals” eat…and in Wilton, apparently they all eat SOUP! In fact, with any sandwich, entree or Blue Plate Special…you get SOUP! (A first for me.) Luckily I LOVE soup… so when the homemade creamy potato soup arrived, I was not complaining…just surprised!
The soup was served on a tiny tray, accompanied by several crackers. It was tasty and hearty…not necessarily the type of food one should consume before biting into a deep-fried pork tenderloin. But…when in Rome…BRING ON THE PORK!
As with most tenderloin portions served in Iowa diners…there was as much meat
OUTSIDE the bun as there was INSIDE. And it was GOOD…VERY GOOD.
Our young waitress was sweet and attentive, and she made sure our drink glasses were never empty. That’s the thing about Small Town USA…those towns are full of GOOD people…and GOOD FOOD.
