Roman Castle Restaurant makes a bold statement on the cover of their menu. “There are only two places to eat. Roman Castle or Home.”
It was a Friday afternoon when we rolled into Mauston, Wisconsin…and for some reason I had my heart set on a fish dinner. I checked out restaurants in this small town, and my GPS assured me that Roman Castle Restaurant on Highway 82 was the place to go.
The inside was clean and inviting. And since we were “Early Birds” it certainly wasn’t crowded, although it did begin to fill up with diners as we waited for our meal.
I must admit I was THRILLED when I opened that menu and saw THIS…
They offered a Friday Fish Fry! And sometimes it pays to be old since I qualified for that Senior Citizen Discount! YUM…And SCORE!
Our meals began with two HUGE hot loaves of bread and a salad large enough to be the entire meal…
Both were absolutely delicious. The bread was warm and fragrant…and the butter melted into every bite. (Our server even asked if we wanted more loaves while we were devouring the two she’d already brought us!) And the salad was crisp and ice cold. All the vegetables were fresh, and the Ranch dressing tasted homemade.
When our fish platters were delivered, I was surprised to see Cole slaw as part of the meal since we had just eaten a garden full of veggies in that dinner salad!
I was NOT complaining, since we try to include as many veggies as possible each day…and I knew the rest of the weekend would be including less than healthy items (like hot dogs and beer!)
After all the delicious bread and veggies, the two pieces of crispy cod were enough to satisfy my craving for fish, and the tarter sauce was creamy and tangy. All in all it was a wonderful meal.
As our server cleared our plates she asked which dessert we would like to try. I was surprised to hear that dessert was also included in the meal!
She offered several choices, including ice cream (Peepaw’s choice) or their home made tart cherry bread pudding with whipped cream. (Yes please!)
I will admit I was slightly disappointed in the dessert. It was cold. Right out of the refrigerator. And it was very dense and heavy. But after all the other successes in our meal I would say the Roman Castle Restaurant was a great choice for our first night in Mauston.
I guess I’d say…When in Rome…order fish!
