Since the sun was shining today, we decided on a little “road trip” to check out a restaurant we’ve heard good things about: The Salt Fork Kitchen in Solon.
We LOVE small towns in Iowa, and Solon’s Main Street has a Christmas Card feel…
And because the town is so small, there was no need to ask for directions. We simply headed for Main Street…and there it was.
Peepaw chose the ham, eggs, potatoes and toast “Daily Special”…and his toast even came with homemade strawberry preserves.
The farm fresh eggs were combined with homemade local sausage, cheese, onions and kale, a delicious combination. The rather spicy homemade salsa was to be served on top of the omelet, but I asked for it on the side since I was unsure of the heat level it might add. The flavor was balanced and the heat was moderate, but I’m a “wimp” when it comes to “hot” spice, so I was glad I asked for the side dish instead.
And the surprise on the plate was a SLAW (yes…for breakfast!) that contained cabbage, apple slices and pears in a creamy dressing-homemade of course. And the wedge of watermelon (obviously NOT local…It’s 18 degrees outside for Heaven’s sake!!) was a tasty palate cleanser after the sausage and cheese component in the eggs.
The breakfast was delicious, although somewhat expensive by local comparison. (Our bill was more than $25 before tip.) But it was fun to get out of town and try something different and unique.
And for dessert? We took a leisurely drive through the Iowa countryside, including a photo stop at this tiny church in the middle of nowhere.
Another road trip, a new dining experience, and time well spent with my traveling buddy/hubby.
Life is good…and I’m so grateful for it all.
