Under normal circumstances I LOVE to shop at thrift stores. But we are definitely not operating under normal circumstances these days.
You might be shocked at the number of brand new cooking gadgets I’ve scored in those beloved thrift stores. I think many folks get cooking items as wedding gifts and they have absolutely no idea what to do with them. So off they go to donate those items…and I am often times the happy recipient!
Obviously this pandemic has curtailed my shopping trips. So the other day I headed to our garage to “shop” the kitchen gadgets I already own.
Shop ‘Til I Drop!
Our wonderful garage cupboards took shape when Peepaw replaced all of our old, flat, hollow core doors in our house. Instead of throwing those old doors away he built all of these storage cabinets with them!
And I must say I was shocked at how many kitchen items I found that I have never even used!
Now before you label me a hoarder…please know that I’ve used much of what you see here during our MANY years of tailgating for Hawkeye football games. But I will admit there are some items I am now excited to try for the first time!
Check out that brand new deep fryer on a lower shelf.
I bought it at Aldi last year, but we left for Florida before I had a chance to try it. So now stay tuned for my first attempt at making onion rings in that bad boy!
And here are three more never-used purchases I found in my garage “shop.”
First…a Creme Brulee set of dishes, and the torch needed to caramelize that crackling sugar coating on top of that yummy dessert. We didn’t have any butane to fill the torch so Peepaw added butane to his future curbside pick up order at Ace Hardware.
And that’s a new tagine. (I think I bought that in “super marked down clearance aisle” at Tuesday Morning years ago!) So now it’s time to try my hand at some Moroccan dishes!
And how about this Ebelskiver pan.
I predict some Danish pancake balls will be on our menu soon. Maybe I’ll even fill them with some of the cherries that are still in our freezer. Hmm…I think I feel a new recipe creation brewing.
Yes, I really miss my usual way to shop. But heading to our garage was the next best thing. So get ready for some new recipes as I make the most of what I already have. Right here in my own kitchen!
Now…let’s start with homemade onion rings…and we’ll see where THAT recipe takes us next!
